How do I choose energy-efficient windows for Texas or Arkansas?
Look at two numbers on the NFRC label. U-factor measures how well the window stops heat transfer — lower is better. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) measures how much solar heat passes through — in hot Southern climates, a low SHGC is what keeps rooms cool. ENERGY STAR sets specific targets for the South-Central and Southern climate zones that cover Texas and Arkansas; we recommend glass packages that meet them.
When is it time to replace windows?
Drafts, condensation or fog between the panes, sashes that stick or won’t stay open, soft or rotting frames, noticeable outside noise and rooms that never feel comfortable all point to failing windows. Single-pane and early aluminum windows are the biggest energy loss in most older homes.

Most whole-home window projects are installed in one to three days. Individual windows can often be replaced in under an hour each.
What are the most energy-efficient windows?
Windows with double or triple glazing, low-E coatings, insulating gas fills and warm-edge spacers. In Texas and Arkansas, prioritize a low Solar Heat Gain Coefficient to block summer heat.
Do new windows lower energy bills?
Replacing old single-pane or leaky windows with ENERGY STAR–certified windows reduces heating and cooling loss, and most homeowners notice more even temperatures and less noise right away.
